What is the Glymphatic system
“Beltane: She turned to the sunlight. And shook her yellow head, and whispered to her neighbour “Winter is dead.”
Have you heard of the Glymphatic System? No. its not a typing mistake!! You already know about the lymphatic system, which helps your body fight off infections and viruses, this system looks after your brain, read on to discover everything you need to know.
The glymphatic system is the brain’s natural cleansing and drainage network, responsible for clearing away waste and excess proteins from the central nervous system. Rather than relying on the body’s lymphatic system, the brain has its own unique process, using cerebrospinal fluid to wash through brain tissue and carry away toxins. This process is most active during deep sleep, when the brain is able to rest, reset, and quite literally clean itself.
As an aromatherapist, I’m always drawn to the quieter, less visible systems of the body, those subtle processes that work continuously in the background to keep us in balance. The glymphatic system is a beautiful example of this, working largely unnoticed yet playing a vital role in long-term neurological health.
This is where a holistic perspective becomes so important. In a world that often glorifies productivity and late nights, we can easily overlook just how essential rest is, not just for energy, but for overall well-being. Supporting healthy sleep isn’t simply about feeling refreshed the next day; it’s about allowing the body the time and space it needs to restore and rebalance at a deeper level.
In my own practice, I see how powerful simple, sensory rituals can be in preparing the body for this restorative state. Aromatherapy, in particular, offers a gentle yet effective way to signal to the nervous system that it is safe to unwind. Essential oils such as lavender, geranium bourbon, and frankincense have long been valued for their calming properties, helping to ease the transition from wakefulness into rest. When used consistently, whether through a bedtime blend, a soothing bath, or a massage oil, they can become part of a supportive rhythm that encourages better quality sleep.
While essential oils don’t directly “activate” the glymphatic system, they play a meaningful role in creating the conditions that allow it to function optimally. By promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting natural sleep cycles, they help nurture the very state in which the body’s innate cleansing processes can do their work.
From a holistic standpoint, this is a gentle reminder that well-being isn’t about quick fixes or isolated interventions. It’s about supporting the body as a whole, honouring its natural rhythms, and working in harmony with its own intelligence. Even something as simple as a consistent, calming bedtime ritual can have a meaningful ripple effect, benefiting not just how we feel, but how our bodies care for us behind the scenes.
Gently supporting your glymphatic system
Honour your sleep
Deep, restful sleep is when the brain naturally clears and restores itself, so allowing yourself enough rest is one of the kindest things you can do for your body.Keep a steady rhythm
Going to bed and waking at similar times can help your body settle into a natural, supportive flow.Create a calming wind-down
A simple evening ritual, perhaps an evening stroll, quiet reading, or a moment with soothing essential oils, can help signal that it’s time to rest. Blends featuring notes such as palmarosa, lavender, geranium, and ylang ylang can be especially comforting as the day comes to a close.Stay hydrated throughout the day
Drinking enough water supports the gentle flow of fluids within the body, including in the brain.Move in a way that feels good
Gentle, regular movement, such as walking or stretching, can support overall circulation and wellbeing.Find a comfortable sleep position
Many people naturally rest well on their side, which may also support the body’s overnight processes.Soften the evening
Dimming lights and putting away screens can help ease the transition into sleep.Make space for calm
Moments of stillness, whether through breathwork, mindfulness, or aromatherapy, can help quiet the mind and prepare the body for rest. A comforting balm or oil, massaged into pulse points or the soles of the feet, can become a simple but grounding part of this ritual. My own blend, “help me, it’s way past my bedtime”, was created with this moment in mind—combining petitgrain, ginger, lavender, and eucalyptus to help ease the transition from busy day to restful night.
A simple breath to ease into sleep
Before settling into bed, try this quiet breathing practice to help the body unwind:
Get comfortable, either lying down or sitting supported
Gently close your eyes, or soften your gaze
Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of 4
Exhale softly through your mouth for a count of 6
Continue for a few minutes, letting each out-breath feel like a small release
If you like, you can pair this with a calming aromatherapy blend—perhaps something with lavender and frankincense—to deepen the sense of stillness.
There’s no need to do it perfectly; simply letting the breath slow and soften can be enough to signal to the body that it’s safe to rest.
A blend such as “help me have a mindful of calm”, with lavender, frankincense and geranium bourbon, can be a gentle companion here, supporting a quieter mind as you prepare for sleep.
Five simple steps to support healthy sleep
Keep a gentle rhythm
Going to bed and waking at similar times each day can help your body find its natural flow and support more restful sleep over time.Create a calming evening ritual
Simple, familiar cues can gently signal the end of the day—such as soft lighting, a warm bath, or a personal aromatherapy blend. Something like “help me, it’s way past my bedtime”, with petitgrain, ginger, lavender, and eucalyptus, can support the transition from doing to resting.Allow yourself time to unwind
Giving yourself space before bed to slow down, whether through reading, gentle stretching, or quiet breathing, can help the body and mind settle more easily. A comforting blend such as “help me have a mindful of calm”, with lavender, frankincense, and geranium bourbon, can be a grounding companion here.Make your sleep space feel restful
A cool, comfortable, and uncluttered environment can support deeper, more settled sleep. Small touches like soft bedding, dim lighting, or a familiar scent can all help create a sense of ease.Be kind to your mind
If thoughts feel busy, gentle practices such as slow breathing or simply noticing the breath can help create space for calm. There’s no need to force stillness, just allowing things to soften is enough.Consider Reflexology
Reflexology helps the body release tension, rebalance and recharge. As the glymphatic system is most active during deep, restorative sleep, supporting the body to fully relax before bed can make a real difference. Reflexology is a gentle, calming treatment that many people find helps to settle a busy mind and prepare for more restful sleep

because sometimes, a small moment of calm can make all the difference
In your garden:
Goodness me, our gardens have sprung into glorious lushness in such a short time, nature is busy. Have you heard of Flower or Bee Lawns? The normal lawn is a desert for wildlife, carefully mown to an each of its life. Underneath your lawn, you will have worms, mitochondria and all sorts working away to keep your lawn lush, but there’s not much for the bees. By introducing small areas of creeping red thyme, white clover, daisies and a small area of dandelions (yes, I know you’ve all run off at the thought but they are pollen powerhouses and also seeds for sparrows), you will create a haven for bees, hoverflies, and butterflies to thrive. It doesn’t have to be all over, just a section in a sunny part, maybe against a path or top of the lawn, you choose.
May is the beginning of No Mow May, which gives the insects a chance of finding food while your flowers get going. Have you watched Secret Garden on BBC1 on a Sunday? You would be amazed at the creatures who depend on longer grass, again you could leave a section longer.
It’s time to sow your veggies and salad vegetables, easy and quick to grow so you can eat safely in the knowledge that no chemicals or fertilisers have coated the leaves, plus you'll save money too. No fancy space needed, just some soil (peat free!) and sunshine.
