Aromatherapy in Everyday Life: Small Ways to Bring Wellbeing into Your Day

Sometimes the smallest rituals bring the greatest sense of calm. A gentle breath, your favourite scent and a quiet moment for yourself, aromatherapy invites us to slow down, reconnect with our senses, and find a little more wellbeing in the everyday.

I have always had an interest, some would say passion, for plants. I love everything about them and the scents and benefits we gain from them. I qualified in the 80s as an aromatherapist and have been fascinated ever since. For me, aromatherapy means more than just a lovely scent, it means sleeping better, feeling calmer, and reaching for a blend if I have a cold. I remember writing my business plan in college with the title Simply Relaxing. This is my therapy business, and it’s during my time as a therapist that I began developing my recipes for Helpmeorganics.

How can scent become part of your daily ritual?

For me, aromatherapy has always been about the little things we can do to look after ourselves. We don’t always have the time to stop and take a long relaxing shower or set aside an hour for ourselves, but we can find small moments throughout the day to enjoy the benefits of scent.

It might be a fresh, uplifting scent in the morning, a few moments with a calming blend before bed or the comforting scent of a balm when we’re feeling under the weather. These simple acts can become familiar rituals, helping us to pause, take a breath and give ourselves a little time.

Plants have so much to offer us, and I will never tire of discovering their aromas and properties. Each essential oil has its own character, and part of the joy of aromatherapy is finding the scents that you personally connect with and enjoy.

Over the years, I have come to appreciate that wellbeing doesn’t always have to involve making big changes. . Sometimes its about bringing a little more care and intention into the things we already do. A familiar scent can become a reminder to slow down, a moment of comfort in a busy day, or a gentle signal that it’s time to unwind..

This is very much at the heart of what I do, both as an aromatherapist and through Helpmeorganics. I want to share the pleasure of plants and their aromatic qualities, and encourage people to discover how these small, everyday rituals can become a meaningful part of their own wellbeing.

Simple ways to enjoy aromas at home

One of the lovely things about aromatherapy is how easy it is to bring the scents of nature into our homes. You don’t need to make big changes or create elaborate routines. Sometimes it’s simply about choosing an aroma that you love and finding a way to enjoy it as part of your day.

Over the years, i’ve developed a range of essential oil blends and products that make it easy to enjoy aromatherapy in different ways, depending on your mood, your surroundings and what you feel you need at that moment.

Create a little moment of calm with an aromastone diffuser. These are simple ways to enjoy the natural aromas of essential oils in your home. I love the ideas of placing one beside your favourite chair, on your bedside table or in a quiet corner where you can take a few moments to yourself.

Make a little time for self care. A massage oil can turn an everyday moment into something more nurturing. Whether its a relaxing foot massage at the end of a busy long day or simply taking time to massage your hands, it’s a lovely way to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

Keep a favourite balm close by. Balms are wonderfully practical and easy to reach for whenever you want to enjoy a familiar aroma. I like the idea of keeping one in a handbag or beside the bed, ready for those moments when you want a comforting scent or have time to nourish your cuticles or dry skin.

Refresh your surroundings with a room spray. A light spritz can bring a fresh, welcoming aroma to a room, whether you’re preparing for the day, preparing the room for yoga or meditation or creating a relaxing atmosphere in the evening.

Enjoy the simple pleasures of candlelight and wax melts. There is something comforting about soft lighting and a soft fragrance filling a room. Candles and wax melts can help create a cosy atmosphere, whether you’re settling down with a book, enjoying a quiet evening or welcoming family and friends into your home.

All my blends and products are created by me, drawing on my years of experience as an aromatherapist and my love of plants and their aromatic qualities. Wherever possible, I choose organic ingredients because I believe that in being thoughtful about what goes into the products we use in our everyday lives.

For me, it’s never just about how something smells. Its about how we make space for those little moments of enjoyment, care and comfort in our day.

My advice is to start small. Choose a scent you love, find a way to enjoy it, and let it become one of those little everyday rituals that you look forward to.

Why taking a few moments for yourself matters

Life can be busy, and it’s easy to put ourselves at the bottom of the list. But taking a few minutes to pause, breathe, and enjoy a favourite scent can simply bring a little more calm and balance to our day.

After all these years as an aromatherapist, I still believe in the beauty of these small moments. That’s why I created my own ritual gift sets, including the Sleep Better Ritual Kit, Find Your Calm Ritual Kit, and my Nature Ritual Reset Kit coming soon. Alongside these, my guided meditations offer another gentle way to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

For me, it’s never about adding more to your to-do list. It’s about finding moments that are just for you, a familiar scent, a quiet breath, or a few moments of stillness.

So, give yourself permission to pause,. You deserve those moments too.
