you need to relax more

“Relaxation isn’t something you do — it’s something you allow.”
— Linda

We’re often told to relax, as if it’s something we can force or fix. But true relaxation unfolds in its own time, when the nervous system feels held, safe and supported. Sometimes it begins with the smallest act of kindness — a familiar scent, a quiet pause, a moment of care.

There are ways to help, here are a few ideas I have

  • practise mindfulness everywhere. Even when you are doing the washing up or making a drink, being present in the moment helps to deflect from your worries or maybe look outside the window and notice the activity in your garden, the sky and surroundings.

  • singing really helps to release endorphins

  • going for a walk in nature helps to soothe and quieten your thoughts

  • learning a new hobby or skill

  • smile. Smiling releases endorphins into the bloodstream to uplift your mood. And smile at others, Dolly Parton says “if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours”! I also think that being curteous to others, maybe hold a door open or say thank you if someone holds a door or gives up their seat to you, fills your mind with feel good emotions. Its always good to be nice

  • making a plan. I love mind maps as they help you work through a problem, often the solution is staring you in the face

  • meet with friends and have a giggle

  • volunteer to meet new people and feel like you are important

  • being active is very effective at helping your body relax

  • get your hands in the soil and grow things. It doesnt matter if you know what you re doing, learning to connect with your garden, the soil and the natural world will always put your stress into proportion.

  • try yoga, pilates, sound baths, practise grounding (where you walk barefoot on grass to connect with the universal life force)

  • and, obviously, surround yourself with essential oils. Frankincense has been found in clinical trials to really quieten your thoughts, it is very beneficial for neurodivergent souls, everyone will benefit from its grounding scent

Plant these plants to feed your birds and insects naturally

Its time to plan your gardening

Did you see Winterwatch last week? They discussed bird feeders and their impact on bird health. Chris recommended growing plants which feed the birds on their natural foods ie seed heads, berries, insects living in the shrubs etc and it has made me think, I completely agree that we all over feed our birds, they would be much healthier if we garden differently, I have put together a very loose table above showing which shrubs and plants the differernt types of birds like and its fairly simple really to do this. I also noted which plants the insects like too so we can help everyone! Basically, if you can plant a small native hedge containing blackthorn, hawthorne, oak, rowan and holly, this will provide so much cover, food and nesting sites for most species, add to this a patch of nettles, teasels and brambles and you ve covered all the birds and insects. I know that lots of people dont like dandelions growing in their lawns, but they are essential food sources for bumblebees and later sparrows and finches, maybe leave a small patch of dandelions, the colour is gorgeous. I think we can do this, you will save money on bird food, less chance of attracting rats etc and the birds will be much healthier as viruses will not be a problem. I’m going to do this so that by autumn, hopefully, i will beable to stop buying bird food which is mainly intensively farmed and uses lots of water. I would be very interested if you are going to try too. Most of all, please dont cut back dead stalks or mow your lawn, there will be insects still fast asleep waiting for spring x
