What is a Solstice?

A solstice is an astronomical event that happens twice a year, marking the moments when the Sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon, relative to the celestial equator. These events are linked to the tilt of the Earth's axis and its orbit around the Sun.

There are two solstices each year in December and June

What is an Equinox?

An equinox is an astronomical event that happens twice a year, when the Sun is directly above the Earth's equator, resulting in nearly equal day and night lengths all over the planet.

There are two equinoxes each year in March and September

Introducing Solquinox Letterbox Subscription

Embrace the stillness of winter, when nature has become quiet, so should we

I wanted to create a Letterbox Subscription to fully celebrate the moment the wheel turns and a new season arrives, the energy changes for some time. This can affect us in many ways, below, I have explained how the we are affected, in each letterbox, we have added information to remedy this effect.

❄️ Winter Solstice Effects (Shortest Day)

  • Less daylight → Less serotonin and vitamin D

  • More melatonin (the sleep hormone), which can make people feel tired and low-energy.

  • Can lead to:

    • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – a type of depression triggered by low light

    • Low mood, fatigue, cravings, or withdrawal

    • Disrupted sleep cycles

💡 Light therapy, outdoor activity, or vitamin D supplements can help during this time.

🌞 Summer Solstice Effects (Longest Day)

  • More daylight → Increased exposure to sunlight

  • Boosts serotonin, a chemical linked to happiness, focus, and calm.

  • Often leads to:

    • Higher energy

    • Better mood

    • Increased motivation

    • Improved sleep (if light exposure is well-balanced)

⚠️ But: Too much light (especially in northern regions) can disrupt sleep or make people feel overstimulated.

🍃 Equinox Effects (Spring & Autumn)

🌸 Spring Equinox:

  • Increasing light → rising serotonin

  • Often brings a boost in mood and energy

  • Can feel like a “fresh start,” which lifts spirits

🍂 Autumn Equinox:

  • Decreasing light → beginning of melatonin increase

  • May trigger early signs of mood dips or tiredness

  • Some people experience “autumn anxiety”—a mild, seasonal tension or sadness as days shorten

✨ Why This Happens (Science Side):

  • Sunlight triggers serotonin production in the brain.

  • It also helps regulate melatonin, which controls sleep.

  • These hormones deeply influence mood, energy, appetite, and sleep

  • drink plenty of water to stay hydrated as this keeps your mucus thin

  • use essential oils at home, in your car and at work. Our “help me im feeling under the weather” blend of tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender and tangerine organic essential oils have powerful anti microbial, anti viral and antiseptic properties whilst helping to clear your head

  • Get out in the fresh air as much as possible to keep your vitamin D levels up, strengthen your lungs and improve your mood

  • stay active as much as possible. A brisk walk, bike ride or dance helps to keep your lymphatic system fully charged to fight off viruses

Everyone becomes obsessed about leaves, i understand brushing them off paths but please leave the others as, not only are they excellent to fertise your garden, but the leaves create vital habitats for over wintering insects, mammals and hedgehogs

Keep watching for the beginning of the annual The Big Advent Calendar Competition, this begins on December 1st for 12 fun-packed days!

A bonfire pile looks like a 5-star hotel to a hedgehog seeking a safe and cosy winter home to hibernate in. They aren’t to know we plan to set light to it
