Help me find my OOMF

Just keep swimming
— Dory, Finding Dory

There is a condition known as mid-winter fatigue, this is when you feel sluggish, have low energy, completely not interested or inspired to do anything and eat more carbs, sweet treats which can lead to weight gain, achy muscles and general listness. BUT there are many ways to quickly find your oompf and here are our tips to re energise your mind and body.

  • we may have had some wild winter weather but try to get outside for a brisk walk each day and swing your arms to get your lymph active, try this for 5 minutes, but remember to keep your head up and breathe. Swinging your arms while walking helps to propel you forward but it also helps with posture. Try a section of your daily walk without swinging your arms as this is believed to increase your metabolic rate. Give it a try!

  • being outside helps us absorb vitamin D. There is nothing better for our soul than a walk on a frosty day full of blue sky and sunshine is there. Wrap up warm but turn your face to the sun (eyes closed to protect your eyes) and enjoy the light. It is the reduction in light that can lower our mood.

  • eat well. We all love a cake, cup of tea with biscuits and everything on toast but try to include root vegetables, nuts and seeds too.

  • learn something new. This invigorates your hippocampus, the part of your brain responsible for memory, and cognitive function. Learning something can build stronger connections between the brains neurons and myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is an insulating, protective layer that forms around nerves in the brain and spinal cord, thus speeding up electrical impulses.

  • winter is a time for relaxation too and good sleep. You will beable to form a good bedtime routine in the winter as the nights are longer and darker which aids a good sleep/wake cycle. Embrace the comfiness of winter.

  • Sing every day to release tension, boost your mood, exercise your facial muscles. There is a new therapy available at some spas called Scream Therapy to help release pent up emotion but If you sing, this also releases any deep down emotions plus if you choose a song with a positive lyric, you will finish smiling. Maybe add a boogie too to get your body moving.

How can essential oils help with the winter blues

Sweet orange essential oil has an uplifting, energising effect on our emotional self, when blended with the fresh scent of Rosemary, the effects are amplified. In the “help me, feel fresh as a daisy” blend, we have added Frankincense to help to stimulate ion channels in the brain to help alieviate anxiety and depression and SAD. The final essential oil is Cedarwood, this woody oil has a relaxing, calming effect and can help to clear the mind, which is very helpful during meditation, yoga and mindfulness.

I get really excited this time of year in my garden, it is beginning to wake up. The frogs are gathering in the pond and the soft buzz of early bumblebees fills the air. Please keep going with all your effort to provide food, fresh water and shelter for all our nature. Say no to pesticides, artificial this and that. Be less tidy and let all flowers grow even the stunning dandelion. The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway, what a lovely way to think that would be, I am happy to surround myself with nature, just being in my garden allows me to exhale.
